Ready:

"Jesus answered, 'I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'" -John 14:6 (NIV)

Set:

We hear it on ESPN, read it in the papers and see it on the nightly news—“smack.” What is it? Well, smack is the common form of vernacular jargon that some players and coaches use to dramatize or publicize their performances or future endeavors. In short, it is trash-talking.

In every league, game and team, you will find someone who has the gift of talking smack. Usually, the person who talks this way has an ego the size of Texas but humility the size of Delaware and common sense the size of an M&M. Smack talkers can talk the talk, but they rarely walk the walk.

Back in Jerusalem, there was a group of men who could talk spiritual smack with the best of them. We know them as the Pharisees—and Caiaphas was the top dog of his day. But the funny thing was that Caiaphas and his buddies thought Jesus and His followers were the trash talkers. But Jesus only spoke the truth.

No verse better illustrates this than John 14:6, where Jesus said that the only way into heaven is through Him. Many thought that such a claim was truly smack of the greatest kind. Some even called it blasphemy. Surely this man could not back up what He was saying!

But they found out very quickly that Jesus could both talk the talk and walk the walk. Jesus is the only way, the only truth and the only life, and no one will get to the Father if they don’t go through Him.

So let me encourage you to not talk smack. Let your walk—your godly walk—do the talking for you. Live your life for Christ because He has given you the way, the truth and the life that leads back to Him. Jesus did all the talking for us. We just need to follow His example. Make sure your walk matches your spiritual talk!

Go:

1. Are you a smack talker, athletically or spiritually speaking?
2. Does your walk match your talk?
3. What do you need to change to be more like Christ?

Workout:

John 11:24-27; Ephesians 4:17-32; 1 Timothy 4:6-9

Overtime:

Lord, help me guard my tongue. Develop in me a godly character that speaks for itself. Show me where I need to allow the Holy Sprit to cleanse me so that I can be more like Christ. I give you all the glory. Amen.
