Ready:

He said to them, “Why are you fearful, you of little faith?” Then He got up and rebuked the winds and the sea. And there was a great calm. —Matthew 8:26

Set:

Opening day is the one time during the season when all teams are on equal ground. Optimism is overflowing among players and fans. Win or lose on opening day, we tend to have a positive spin on the outcome. If we win, we’re looking good. This could be our big year. If we lose, well, it’s just one game. We still have a long season ahead of us. It’s easy to have faith in the team early in the year when the possibilities for success are endless, but how about in the midst of a losing streak?

When Jesus and His disciples were in a boat crossing the Sea of Galilee, a massive storm came upon them, causing the waves to come over the boat. The disciples woke up Jesus, and they cried out, “Lord, save us! We’re going to die!” (v. 25). So much for being optimistic. It was smooth sailing for the disciples initially, then without warning the storm was rocking their boat. Jesus calmed the wind and waves that day, and He can calm the storms in your life today as well. Coaches, let’s keep our faith visible to our teams, no matter how strong the wind and waves.

Go:

1. How easy is it for you to have faith in yourself or your team at the beginning of the season when the slate is clean? What about halfway through the season when you are in the middle of a storm?
2. When you face storms in life do you usually question God or turn to Him for strength?
3. What storm do you have in life right now for which you need the calming power of Jesus?

Extra Reading: 1 Corinthians 16:13; 2 Corinthians 5:7; 2 Timothy 4:7; Hebrews 11

Overtime:

Lord, give me unwavering faith in You in the midst of the storms in my life, even when I don’t understand why I’m going through them. Amen.
