All Comes to Light
“Meanwhile, a crowd of many thousands came together, so that they were trampling on one another. He began to say to his disciples first, ‘Be on your guard against the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. There is nothing covered that won’t be uncovered, nothing hidden that won’t be made known. Therefore, whatever you have said in the dark will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in an ear in private rooms will be proclaimed on the housetops.’” – Luke 12:1-3
A hypocrite says one thing but does the complete opposite.
For example, you might have a teammate ranting about working hard at practice, but then you find them leaving practice early and not doing extra work. They spoke passionately about something they didn’t follow through on, thus making them a hypocrite. It’s easy to speak about doing all the right things but even harder to follow through with your actions.
Jesus, in the book of Luke, is telling his followers that they need to be aware of the ‘leaven of the Pharisees.’ Leaven is a cooking agent used to puff up the bread before it’s ready to cook, and a Pharisee was a religious scholar who was commonly known for being very prideful.
Jesus warned his disciples that many of the things that the Pharisees preached were ‘puffed up’ and untrue because they did not follow what they preached. Jesus wanted them to know that God always knew the truth even if the Pharisees could convince the people around them of something different. There is nothing we can hide from God because He sees and knows all.
It may be tempting to live a life of hypocrisy; it’s much easier to say you’re doing the right thing than to do it. But know that everything will be brought to light, and God knows if you are walking in truth or not.
- How do you feel about hypocrites?
- In what ways are you tempted to hide your sin behind false truths?
- What difference would it make in your everyday life if you believed God sees and knows all?
“Abba Father, we come before You now, knowing we try to hide things from You. We pray that You humble us and remind us that You see all and that all will come to light. Give us Your spirit so that we do not fall into the trap of hypocrisy but walk in a way that glorifies who You are. Amen.”
