His Surpassing Love
By Mark Jones
“And to know Christ’s love that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.” – Ephesians 3:19
In the 1980s, a National Basketball Association player named Darryl Dawkins managed to break the backboard on a dunk, and he did it twice. Those powerful dunk shots were followed by showers of broken glass as they came apart. He was not the only one to break a backboard in basketball history.
In 1993, a rookie named Shaquille O’Neal did it differently. On one dunk against the then-New Jersey Nets, he snapped the backboard off the support. On another dunk against the Phoenix Suns, he broke the support itself. No one had seen either of those things happen in a professional game before, maybe ever. It was almost beyond imagination.
Think about the verse above and consider these words: “to know Christ’s love that surpasses knowledge.” How cool is that? In Christ, we have a love that is so awesome we cannot fully comprehend it. Your sinful, fallen mind cannot understand the depth and power of His love for you.
Psalm 36:7 says, “How priceless your faithful love is, God.” His love is something we cannot comprehend. His love is something we could never put a dollar figure on.
When you spend time in the Word, don’t just read it. Think about it deeply. When you are on your knees before Him, be thankful and sit in His presence. His Word tells us to meditate on Him and the Word. That may not help us understand His love better, but we will embrace it more.
- Have you ever seen something in your sport that blew your mind? What was it?
- Take a moment, be still, thank the Lord for His love, and think about Him.
“Father, I simply thank You for loving me with a love I cannot imagine. Jesus bought my freedom from sin with His blood, by Your plan. Thank You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
