New Mercies

Ready

“Because of the Lord’s faithful love we do not perish, for his mercies never end. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness! I say, “The Lord is my portion, therefore I will put my hope in him.” – Lamentations 3:22-24

Set

If you have a terrible game, the good news is that tomorrow is a new day. Whatever happened the day before is done, and you have a fresh day to start anew. At the start of a tournament, you have multiple games to improve, so if the first one doesn’t go to plan, you can look forward to tomorrow, holding endless possibilities.

Often, we don’t think that optimistically. If we have one bad game or start a series with a loss, it’s hard not to think that is how the rest of them will go. That negativity will set you up to fail, more than making a mistake in the game.

This negativity can transfer over into our daily lives when we make mistakes. Thankfully, God gives us new mercies each morning! What does this look like?

You have decided to stop cursing so much when you play your sport. Then you have one game where you play horribly and slip back into your old ways. If we come to God and repent, He wipes clean that day and provides us with a brand new one tomorrow. Our God does not sit and keep score of our failures to dock us points. He is a loving God who wants us to draw closer to Him. With that desire, He will give us every chance we could imagine to be His disciple.

His mercy never ends; all we have to do is seek it.

Go
  • What is a sinful habit you desire to quit in life or as you compete?
  • When you mess up, can you approach the situation optimistically?
  • Think of an example of how God showed you mercy.
Overtime

“Creator of heaven and earth, we come to You in our brokenness to confess how we have failed today. Forgive and renew the right spirit within us. Help us believe that each rising sun is a new set of never-ending mercies. Amen.”
