The Perfect Match
“For he chose us in him, before the foundation of the world, to be holy and blameless in love before him. He predestined us to be adopted as sons through Jesus Christ for himself, according to the good pleasure of his will,” – Ephesians 1:4-5

Most coaches and athletes understand the concept of recruitment, even if they aren’t directly involved in recruiting themselves. The goal is to find that perfect match. The athlete wants a coach and a program that will meet his or her needs, and the coach wants an athlete that will contribute to the program.
The coach usually drives the process, but once everything is said and done and an offer is made, it’s ultimately up to the athlete to commit. After that, time will tell if the perfect match was made.
This is also a pretty good representation of what happens in a relationship with God. God was the coach; he saw us, loved us, and chose to pursue us. He made us an offer to join His team through the redeeming sacrifice of His Son, Jesus Christ, and we had to commit to accepting it.
The best part is this: once we enter into that relationship, we can have confidence that the perfect match was made. God will never fail on His end of the relationship. And even though we fail, God takes pleasure in having us on His team. Unlike an earthly coach, He doesn’t need us to contribute anything, but He gives us a chance to be made whole in Him and to bear fruit that blesses others and leads them closer to Him. That is the opportunity of a lifetime.
- Did you ever experience (or know someone who experienced) being recruited? Was the experience good or bad? Why?
- What was it like when God recruited you to His team, and you accepted?

“Lord, thank You for loving me and choosing me to be a part of Your team. I admit my weakness and acknowledge that I wouldn’t have this opportunity without You and Your sacrifice. Amen.”
