What Do You Desire?
“Like newborn infants, desire the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grown up into your salvation, if you have tasted that the Lord is good.”- 1 Peter 2:2-3
A few years back, I was training for a half-marathon. As the race date approached, I aimed to run 12 miles straight. If I could run 12 miles on race day, I knew I could push myself an extra mile to reach the finish line. The day I decided to run the 12 miles the sun was out and it was getting hotter by the minute. Throughout my whole run, I could only think about rewarding myself with a gold-purple Gatorade. If I completed my 12 mile goal, the first stop I was making was at the gas station down the road to buy the biggest, coldest Gatorade they had. I desired it so severely that it made me run the last few miles even faster to get my reward.
Desire makes us push ourselves much further than we thought possible. Your desire could be as simple as a cold Gatorade or as monumental as a scholarship or career. We have many desires in this world, from sports to school, marriage and families, careers and bucket list trips.
What about our spiritual desires? Do we desire each day to be enriched with the Word of God so that we might draw closer to Him? What about the desire for confession and repentance so that our hearts and minds might be pure before the Lord? Do we consume ourselves with our desires for our lives or do we desire God and pursue what He puts in front of us?
As you ponder these thoughts, I want you to think about Jesus' life. His desire was simply to honor His Father. By honoring His Father, Jesus changed the world. He didn't change the world based on His own desire for power, freedom, popularity, etc. He changed the world by showing us the true way to everlasting life.
- How do you want to change the world?
- What are your current desires?
- How might your current desires be influenced by the world instead of Christ?
"Father, we repent of how our desires reflect the ways of this world and our own desires. Give us the desire to wake up each day and pursue You with all our might. Help inform us through Your word on how we might best be able to pursue Your will for our life. Amen."
