A Time for All

Ready

“There is an occasion for everything, and a time for every activity under heaven: a time to give birth and a time to die; a time to plant and a time to uproot; a time to kill and a time to heal; a time to tear down and a time to build; a time to weep and a time to laugh; a time to mourn and a time to dance.” –  Ecclesiastes 3:1-4

Set

The tricky thing about dreams is that they are future plans that you are working toward today.

This odd combination typically leads to impatience. You might have dreamed of playing pro for your favorite team as a little kid. This dream is what propelled you to start practicing and perfecting your sport. As a kid, you know that your dream is far away, and you don’t expect to go pro this minute (even if the 1993 movie “Rookie of Year” tells us otherwise.) As we age, we get impatient for our dreams to come true in our desired time frame. We create a schedule for how we think our life should go based on our hard work. Our impatience often causes unnecessary anxiety and angst toward God.

Scripture shows us in Ecclesiastes that God has a time and reason for everything, a time for every activity under heaven; this includes your dreams. Holding too tight to the schedule we have created for life can lead to anger toward God. “Why are you keeping this from me?” “I have done everything right; why is this not happening?” or my most used, “What did I do wrong?” All these questions blame God for not adhering to the timeline that we created.

Our God is all-knowing. He does not conform to our timelines. He might instill in us dreams that we pursue, but that does not give us free rein to demand when or how God chooses for these dreams to play out in the life He gave us.

Remember that there is a time for everything; the good and the bad all have a purpose. Lay your dreams at the feet of Jesus and choose to serve Him over yourself.

Go
  • What are the dreams you have for your life?
  • Do you get mad at God if they don’t happen as you would like?
  • What control do you need to let go of?
Overtime

“God, You have our life in Your hands. You know how each day of our life will play out. Give us Your peace and patience so we do not rush our dreams. Let us not cast blame Your way when things do not go our way. Let us honor Your time, not pursue our own. Amen.”
