In the Clouds
"Therefore since we also have such a large cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily ensnares us, and run with endurance the race that lies before us." –Hebrews 12:1
I’ll never forget attending my first professional basketball game. I sat two rows from the top of the stadium in the “nosebleed” section. Before the game, I went courtside to see the players up close. It was an awesome feeling standing there looking up. I could only imagine what it would be like during the game when those seats were full and the fans were cheering.
The word “clouds” in ancient Greek times referred to the highest seats in a stadium. If you had a ticket for one of those seats, the usher might have said, “Your seat is in the clouds today.”
As a believer in Jesus Christ, we are like athletes on center court in a stadium filled with cheering fans. I believe God has challenged each of us to do something for Him. The question is whether or not we will obey.
The next time we attend or watch a sporting event on TV, we should picture ourselves and God’s task for us in the center of the fans. As we take steps of obedience, we’ll remember that the bleachers of heaven are filled with those who have already faced the enemy and won their fight. They faced the impossible and accomplished the unthinkable. They stand as proof that we can make it too!
1. Have you ever felt overwhelmed by something God was asking you to do?
2. How can Hebrews 12:1 encourage you to persevere?
3. How can you encourage a teammate or friend who doubts their ability to serve God?
1 Corinthians 9:24-27; Philippians 3:12-14; 2 Timothy 4:7-8
Lord, thank You for reminding me in Your Word, that You are cheering me on. I want to be obedient to the things You have asked me to do. Give me the strength and courage not to give up. Amen.
