The Crowd

"Therefore since we also have such a large crowd of witnesses surrounding us, let us lay aside every weight and the sin that so easily ensnares us, and run with endurance the race that lies before us, keeping our eyes on Jesus." — Hebrews 12:1–2
There is nothing that compares to the feeling of walking on to the field or court with the stands full of people cheering for one’s team. There is energy in the air and a sense of adrenaline pumping through everyone’s veins. The atmosphere is full of excitement and enthusiasm. As coaches, we rarely think about the people who are watching us from the sidelines. Our attention is focused on the players. We want them to be ready, prepared, and in place.
Whether we like it or not, people are watching how we respond to each play and call of the game. Our actions and reactions often say more about us than we care to admit. Whether congratulating or criticizing a player, we are surrounded by a large crowd of witnesses who see each move we make and often hear each word we say. Whether we acknowledge them or not, their eyes are upon us.
Even though many are watching us, let us keep our eyes on Jesus. Let’s make sure we represent Him well in front of the parents, the team, and the other coaches. As they watch us coach, let them see an example of what it would be like if Jesus were their coach.
1. As a coach, what one attitude or action can you begin to change this week that would make you a better example of a Christian coach?
2. Have you said or done something publicly as a coach that you need to ask forgiveness for? To the team? To the fans?
3. How can you “keep your eyes on Jesus” more faithfully this week as a coach?

Lord, help me to realize that many people watch me. Help me act and react on and off the field in a way that honors You. When people watch me, let them see You. Thank You Lord, for allowing me to represent You to so many people. Amen.
