Dog Soldier
Then He said to them all, “If anyone wants to come with Me, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow Me.” — Luke 9:23
When the Cheyenne Indians were going into battle, they had a warrior who rode out in front know as the “Dog Soldier.” What set this soldier apart from the rest was that he would lead his tribe into battle and when the fighting reached its hottest, when no one knew who would win, the Dog Soldier would dismount his horse and drive his stake into the ground. He was attached to the stake by a rope. Everyone knew that the Dog Soldier could be counted on to take a stand and fight to the finish. He was a leader because he was a servant.
God needs people who are willing to take a stand for the right way of doing things. Who will drive their stake in the ground at practice, at home, in the classroom, at church? God is looking for us to fight for Christian morals and ethics as if our lives, and the lives of those who follow us, depend on our leadership. Jesus was the greatest “Dog Soldier” of all when he planted His stake in the ground in the form of a cross. He was nailed there to give us the greatest victory known to man. But the story does not end there. Jesus asks us to take up our cross daily and follow Him. Everywhere we go we are to drive our stake in the ground and protect those whom God has entrusted to our influence.
1. How would your spouse, team, family, and community rate you as a “Dog Soldier”?
2. Are you leading in such a way that others see you as having a servant’s heart?
3. Are you willing to take up your cross every day and follow Jesus?

Dear God, I pray that today as I lead my team, coaching staff, and family into battle against the prince of darkness, that You will give me the courage to stand. I pray that I will follow the example of the greatest soldier ever known, Jesus, by being a servant leader. Amen.
