A Hole in Your Gospel
"His divine power has given us everything required for life and godliness through the knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness." - 2 Peter 1:3
Remember the old campfire song: "There's a hole in the bottom of the sea"? My favorite verse went like this,
There’s a flea … on the speck … on the frog … on the bump … on the branch … on the log … in the hole … in the bottom of the sea… There’s a hole… There’s a hole. There’s a hole in the bottom of the sea.
It’s catchy and funny—but let’s flip the script: What if that hole represents something missing in our walk with Jesus? Paul Tripp reminds us, "Thousands and thousands of sincere believers have a huge hole right smack dab in the middle of their gospel." We know Jesus saved us (past), and we trust God has heaven for us (future). But what about now? Too many coaches and athletes live stuck in the middle—saved, but not transformed. That’s the hole!
God’s power gives us everything we need to make an impact today. But we need to live our faith every day—not just at Bible studies or on Sundays. Real faith shows up with integrity in the locker room, during practice, in how we speak, compete, forgive and how we confront those who push our buttons.
Be in the moment that God gives you—today. Not tomorrow. Right now is when transformation begins.
Remember:
- Grace behind me.
- Power within me.
- Purpose today.
- Pinpoint a "hole in your gospel" where you can improve a relationship with a friend, teammate or family member.
- Name one new habit that you can practice to help you move from “saving grace” to “transforming grace”
- Pick someone (on your team, in school, or at home) where you will stretch your faith, this week.
"My God and my coach, open my eyes to the holes in my faith. With your grace behind me and your power within me, let me live with keen insight into your purpose for me today. Amen."
