A Leader Like God Wants You To Be
"Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant..." - Matthew 20:26
Why won’t they follow me? He rakes his fingers through his hair and frowns. I’m supposed to be their leader, so why can’t they just listen to me like they are supposed to? There are times when we are called to lead in the world of sports and we feel like everyone is rebelling. Our coach puts us in charge of the team and no one wants to follow us. We want to help everyone be great, but no one wants to be a part of what we are doing. It is frustrating to attempt to lead when no one is willing to follow.
The Bible talks about what it means to be “great” among others. If we want to be a leader, we need to be someone who our team will respect. If we want to be a leader, we need to be following after God’s leading. What does the Bible have to say about leaders? A leader should look out for the interests of others over their own. If you want to lead well, you need to care about those you are leading. A leader should be a servant to all those who are following after her or him. If you want others to see you as someone worthy of respect, serve them. A leader cannot be selfish. If you would like to lead in a way that will get others to follow, focus on them and not just yourself.
When we are leading in the way that we are meant to, not only will people follow us, but they will see God in us. We can make a difference in the hearts of those around us when we follow God and we lead as he wants us to lead.
- How are you showing yourself to be a servant to those on your team?
- Can you change the way that those around you view you by living a little less for yourself and a little more for others?
