Pick Me! Pick Me! Pick Me!

"Accept my instruction instead of silver, and knowledge rather than pure gold. For wisdom is better then precious stones, and nothing desirable can compare with it." — Proverbs 8:10–11
Coaches often travel the country recruiting future players, selling their programs, and hoping that future stars will pick their particular school. Blue-chip recruits are in high demand, and every coach is inwardly crying, “Pick me! Pick me!” This is a great analogy for choosing godly wisdom, as illustrated in Proverbs.
In chapter 8, wisdom calls out to us and pleads her case about why we should pick her. Choosing wisdom is invaluable. It is better than the best thing we could ever want. Why? As the writer says at the end of the chapter, whoever finds wisdom finds happiness and life, and obtains favor from the Lord.
So what is this kind of wisdom? How do we recognize it or nurture it? We find it in the person of Jesus Christ, who lived a sinless life on earth, yet was with the Lord in the beginning of creation when wisdom was formed (Pr 8:22). The Bible tells us that God “has spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things and through whom He made the universe.” Jesus Christ is “the radiance of His glory, the exact expression of His nature, and He sustains all things by His powerful word” (Heb 1:2–3a). In Jesus, we discover the exact representation of God’s sustaining wisdom. And when we live in Him, we grow in the knowledge and wisdom that guides our lives. With Him there is health, peace, and life.
As we act and react in a spirit of wisdom, making wise choices based on our relationship with Christ, we will experience the rich harvest that righteous living brings. Wisdom is calling out to us, “Pick me! Pick me!” When we do, we will never be disappointed.
1. How have you chosen wisdom in certain situations and what later proved to be folly in others?
2. What do you consider to be authentic godly wisdom?
3. How can you start living in the wisdom that comes from Christ?
