We May Need Blinders
“Let your eyes look forward; fix your gaze straight ahead. Carefully consider the path for your feet, and all your ways will be established. Don’t turn to the right or to the left; keep your feet away from evil.” – Proverbs 4:25-27
If you have ever been to a horse race, you might have noticed that the horses have blinders covering the outside of their eyes.
The blinders let the horse see only what is straight before them and do not allow them to use their peripheral vision while racing. This prevents the horse from getting scared or distracted by what’s around them and allows them to focus only on what is straight ahead and the track laid before them.
Sometimes, we distract ourselves by focusing on everything but the path ahead. We get caught up in thinking about the past and what could have been. Sometimes, we prevent ourselves from moving forward because we are too focused on what other people are doing besides us, and we spend our time watching them instead of pursuing our path.
God provides us with a bounty of wisdom regarding how to live daily. In Proverbs, He advises us against becoming distracted by what’s happening around us and tells us to focus on the path before us.
God wants us to carefully watch our direction to prevent evil from overtaking our path. If we become distracted, it’s much easier for Satan to get us off track because we are already distracted by the world. If we choose to stay focused on moving forward toward God and taking things one step at a time, Satan has a lot less room to get us off the path.
Maybe it’s time for you to put some blinders on in your life and focus on the path God has laid before you.
- Where in your life do you often get distracted? Past, present or future?
- Do you need help staying focused on your path when others are doing something different around you?
- What are some ways that Satan has distracted you in the past?
“Lord, You are the straight path that we desire to follow. It’s hard not to get distracted and off track. Lord, put blinders on us where we seem to fall short. Help us to focus on our own path and not on others. Pull us out of the past and plant us, feet first, on Your path. Guide us, God. Amen.”
