What's Your Role?
"For as the body is one and has many parts, and all the parts of that body, though many, are one body—so also is Christ."
–1 Corinthians 12:12
Why do we place so much emphasis on the role we have on a team? For example, a non-starter might think, I’m not on the field . . . I’m not good enough. On the other hand, starters might carry an "I’m better than you" attitude. We must evaluate our attitudes. Does our attitude bring a smile to God’s face? On a team, each person’s talents add to the whole. Who, by themselves, could take on a whole team and win?
First Corinthians 12:18-22 (The Message) sums it up: “. . . think about how all this makes you more significant, not less. A body isn’t just a single part blown up into something huge. It’s all the different-but-similar parts arranged and functioning together. If Foot said, ‘I’m not elegant like Hand, embellished with rings; I guess I don’t belong to this body,’ would that make it so? If Ear said, ‘I’m not beautiful like Eye, limpid and expressive; I don’t deserve a place on the head,’ would you want to remove it from the body? If the body was all eye, how could it hear? If all ear, how could it smell? As it is, we see that God has carefully placed each part of the body right where he wanted it . . . think about how this keeps your significance from getting blown up into self-importance . . . What we have is one body with many parts, each its proper size and in its proper place. No part is important on its own.”
Whatever role you play, live it with all your heart, mind, and strength. This will bring a smile to God’s face!
- Is your attitude benefiting the team as a whole?
- How would your teammates rate your attitude?
- How can you fill your unique role on the team, regardless of what it is?

God, please teach me to be more like You. Show me how to be a positive influence on my team. Amen.
