Finish Line
"I am sure of this, that He who started a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus." -Philippians 1:6
At the college that I attended, we referred to long-distance runners as “jar heads.” We figured that each day they would unscrew their heads, take out their brains, and then run an unbelievable amount of miles before returning and putting their brains back in their heads.
I say this all in good fun, obviously. I have always admired distance runners and think that distance running is an amazing ability. When these runners race, they set their minds on finishing the race. Lap after lap they strain through sore muscles and tough conditions to finish what they started.
In a way, you could say that we’re all distance runners. When we’re born, our race begins—the race of life. There may be no ribbons or trophies in our life’s race, but there can be an amazing prize. Jesus Christ will one day return. At the finish line, Christ Himself will be waiting to congratulate those whom He recognizes.
If you believe in Him and He has found residence in your heart and life, you will receive the prize of heaven. But if you have lived for yourself and have denied Him through sinful choices, when you cross over the finish line, you will be finished. He will not know you, for you did not desire to know Him when you had the chance. We all will cross the finish line one day. Will the results of your efforts result in His glory?
Give your all for God all of the time, while you still have the opportunity. Never give up, give out, or give in to what the world holds on to today. You are a warrior. Compete for Him, run for Him, and run to Him daily. Finally, be confident in this: If you belong to Him, He will complete the work in you at the finish line! Keep up your endurance. One day it will all be worth it!
1. How are you running your race?
2. Are you running as a member of His team, or are you running for yourself?
3. How can you start to be a road warrior for Him today?
Psalm 64; Matthew 5:12; 1 Corinthians 1:8
Lord, as I live my life for You today, help me run with endurance to the finish line that You have marked for me. Only You know when my time on Earth is to come to an end. Help me run for You and only You until that day. I am Yours, Lord—all of me for all of You! Until the end, amen.
