Can't Lose
“If, then, there is any encouragement in Christ, if any consolation of love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, make my joy complete by thinking the same way, having the same love, united in spirit, intent on one purpose.” – Philippians 2:1-2
“Clear eyes, full hearts, can’t lose.”
This mantra from the 2006 TV show “Friday Night Lights” became the guiding principal of a fictional Texas high school football team. This mantra symbolized the unity of a team dedicated to one purpose.
The purpose is to have a clear, unobstructed view of the world and hearts full of joy in all circumstances. Combining these two actions would equal victory no matter what the scoreboard said. Coach Taylor used this saying to inspire the Panthers football team because he knew there was more to life than just wins and losses and that football was the vehicle to help bring unity to the town of Dillon.
As a body of believers, we must be united for one purpose. That purpose is to love God with all our heart, soul and mind (Mark 12:30) and be His hands and feet here on earth (Matthew 28:16-20). If we let things of this earth cloud our eyes and hearts and distract us from this role, then our job will never be done well.
Often, Satan attacks the body of believers through division based on issues that do not matter. What we wear to church, the type of music played in worship, or how we take up the offering should not be issues large enough to cause division among believers who are united for God’s purpose.
As Christians, we are called to be united to serve God, not our own self-interests. Choose today to put aside your opinions and be united with the body of Christ. With one purpose, we cannot lose.
- Do you have an example of how division sowed hate?
- What could you do personally to help the body of believers unite?
- What does it mean to be “united in spirit?”
“Lord God, You have called us to be Your hands and feet here on earth. We are so easily distracted and divided based on our understanding or ideas. We pray we are drawn toward unity with our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. Let hate take a backseat; and let love be our life’s driving force. Amen.”
