God Always Remembers

Ready

“After a long time, the king of Egypt died. The Israelites groaned because of their difficult labor, they cried out, and their cry for help because of the difficult labor ascended to God. God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. God saw the Israelites, and God knew.” – Exodus 2:23-25

Set

In my high school career, I never scored a goal for my team. Granted, my position was a defender, so the opportunity rarely presented itself.

At the start of my senior year, I asked my coach if he could move me forward in one game and give me a chance to score a goal. He promised he would before the season ended. Game after game went by, and I still hadn’t gotten my chance. Just when I thought my coach had forgotten his promise, He called me into one of our last games of the season. Even though I didn’t get to score my goal, it meant more to me that my coach had not forgotten his promise.

After the game, I approached him and admitted that I had thought He had forgotten. My coach said he assumed I did, but he told me that he was just waiting for the perfect time to enact his promise; he never forgot; he just was waiting until he saw fit to put the pledge into action.

In Exodus, we see a similar story where the Israelites are suffering in slavery in Egypt and believe that God has forgotten them. It’s not till they cry out for God’s help that the text says He remembers His promise to his people to save them from the bonds of slavery.

If we study Scripture more and apply what we know about God’s character, we know that God doesn’t forget. God is all-knowing, which means He doesn’t need to be reminded about the promises He makes. It’s all about God’s perfect timing, and He is the only one who knows when He wants to act on His promises. We may never know God’s timing, but we never have to doubt that He will keep His promises.

Go
  • What is a promise from God that you’re struggling to believe right now?
  • What does it mean that God is all-knowing?
  • What does it look like this week for you to wait on God in your life and in your sport?
Overtime

“God Almighty, You are all-knowing, lacking in nothing. You never have once forgotten a promise or forgotten me. Help me be patient and not expect You to work on my schedule. Let my heart and mind be still before You, God. Let me have expectant hope that You will move when You are ready, Amen.”
