Humility, Part 2

Ready

“He also said to the one who had invited him, ‘When you give a lunch or a dinner, don’t invite your friends, your brothers or sisters, your relatives, or your rich neighbors, because they might invite you back, and you would be repaid. On the contrary, when you host a banquet, invite those who are poor, maimed, lame, or blind. And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you; for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.’” – Luke 14:12-14

Set

Yesterday, we learned a radical way of viewing ourselves. We do not need to be the most important and prominent person in the room, on the court or the field when we have Christ. Our humility shows that Christ is above anything that we do in a game, match or in life. In the same way, our actions should represent freedom now that we have security in Christ.

When we do someone a favor, we often expect to be repaid. For example, if you picked up all the baseballs after practice one day, you might expect that you won’t have to do it again that week or you might expect to get a thank you from your coach and teammates.

Acting humbly is doing a task without expecting repayment or even thanks. You do the action simply to practice walking in the ways of the Lord. You serve your teammates to show them the love and service of Christ, not to get a pat on the back. When we expect something from our services, we do the service with pride, not humility.

This is not an easy lesson for our fleshly hearts to learn. It takes time, but you can start today by studying how Christ served those around Him without ever getting anything in return. Then, start putting into action what you learned. A great place to begin serving with humility is with your team and coaches.

  • Can you think of a story where Christ served someone out of humility?
  • What needs to change in your heart for you to be able to serve without needed recognition?
Overtime

“Abba Father, You provide us with many examples in Your scripture of how to serve people out of humility. Give us the knowledge to study Your word and pursue a life like Christ. Fix our hearts so that we can serve others without expecting anything in return. Amen.”
