Overcome
“Then Caleb quieted the people in the presence of Moses and said, ‘Let’s go up now and take possession of the land because we can certainly conquer it!’ But the men who had gone up with him responded, ‘We can’t attack the people because they are stronger than we are!” - Numbers 13:30-31
When I was 8 years old, my soccer team played in a tournament where we signed up for the 10 and under bracket. On our team, we had some young 8-year-olds, and the other teams were mostly made up of 9 and 10-year-olds. Even a slight age difference can appear physically like a game between giants and ants. When we saw the giants we were playing against, we let our fear replace our faith in our skills. Our coach tried to comfort us by reminding us that we had practiced hard and that it didn’t matter who is on the other side of the ball as long as we went out there and remembered what we know to be true. Coach told us that if we walked onto that field afraid, we had already lost before the whistle blew.
No matter how impossible a task might seem, if God has called you to it, you must trust that He will see you through it. Caleb trusted God in his heart. Caleb was one of the spies Moses sent into the Promised Land to scout out what the land and people were like. The spies brought back abundant fruit and spoke of how amazing the land was. They also reported about the people already living in the land, clans of native people, were physically much larger than the Israelites. All the spies saw the same thing but it was only Caleb, having faith in the promise God had already given them, who told his people that they would overcome and win the Promised Land. The other spies disagreed and let their fear speak against the Israelites going to fight for the promised land.
The other spies, like my soccer team, were defeated before the fight began. Fear erased all the wonder and beauty of the Promised Land that God had for them. Caleb was also fearful; he knew the fight would be hard, but he also trusted that God was equipping them for the fight, and they would overcome.
Don't let what your eyes see overshadow the victory that God has already shown you.
- What does it look like to let fear inform your decisions?
- What are some promises that God has already given to us?
- What is something you are afraid of right now?
"Lord, You're not the author of fear but the Way Maker. You have given us many promises to hold onto as we navigate this life. We will run into giants that seem impossible to conquer but we have the truth and knowledge that You have already won, and You always keep Your promises. Give us that comfort today. Amen."
