Off the Sidelines

“This book of instruction must not depart from your mouth; you are to meditate on it day and night so that you may carefully observe everything written in it. For then you will prosper and succeed in whatever you do.” – Joshua 1:8

Set

Football is a sport that requires athletes to spend much time studying and memorizing plays.

Each time the ball is snapped, a new play begins. Each player on the field has a specific job spelled out in the play they studied. If you don’t know your job, the whole play could be in jeopardy, costing your team time and potentially points on the board. All players are expected to memorize the plays so the team can function at its highest level.

The Bible is our playbook for life. Within its pages are the instructions God gives us to best succeed here on earth and to be united with Him in Heaven. If we are unaware of what the Bible tells us, we are like a player on the field who has no clue what they should do once the play has started.

Without the knowledge of Scripture, we would wander around, lost and confused, unable to guide or help our teammates, and ultimately cause more harm than good. A Christian without direction from God’s Word isn’t able to be a valuable tool for God’s Kingdom. You might as well be sitting on the sidelines of life.

I know I don’t want to spend my life on the sidelines, unable to help where needed. This desire to be the best I can be for God requires me to study His Word to know how to help when the ball of life is snapped.

  • Do you feel like you are on the sidelines of life right now?
  • What do you do with the knowledge after you learn it?
Overtime

“Lord God, You have graciously given us Your Word as a guide for life. Forgive us when we have not treasured it correctly. Give us the desire to get off the sidelines and put in the work to be a positive player for Your Kingdom. Amen.”
