We Are But Dust

Ready

“For he knows what we are made of, remembering that we are dust. As for man, his days are like grass— he blooms like a flower of the field; when the wind passes over it, it vanishes, and its place is no longer known.” – Psalm 103:14-16

Set

There is something nostalgic and humbling when you see a professional athlete visiting their hometown and remembering where they began. They arrive in new cars and nice clothes to show others around their elementary school and childhood homes. It seems like a drastically different world from where they started to where they are now.

Every time we get a glimpse into the former life of a superstar, we are all left a little more humbled and grateful for where we have come from in our own lives as well.

Life is fast, and we spend much of it trying to climb the ladder of success that we deem worthy of our time. As we climb and climb the ladder, we can forget where we started. This often leads us to forget how blessed we are due to God’s love and favor.

We must remember that everything on this earth belongs to God; nothing belongs to us (Deuteronomy 10:14). All humankind was created from the dust of the earth, breathed to life by God. We did nothing to arrive on this earth. Psalm 103 tells us that God remembers that we came from dust, and in the end, to dust, we shall return.

When you are reminded of your genuinely humble beginnings, it makes you stop and realize how mighty God is and how small we are. Too often, we are told how great we are to the point where we forget who the Great One truly is. We are not the star in our life; God is always the star.

Have you forgotten who created You and who the focus of your life is? It’s not too late to step off the ladder and bow at His feet.

Go
  • How do you feel when you are reminded that you are dust?
  • Have you created goals in your life without God?
  • What does life look like in pursuing God instead of your goals?
Overtime

“God, Creator of all, You are the focus of our world. From the day we are born, we are told to reach for the stars, but how often do the stars we are reaching for skip past You? Forgive us when we think too highly of ourselves and forget that all good things start with You. Align our hearts to pursue Your glory, not our own. Amen.”
