What We Should Have Faith In
“As I urged you when I went to Macedonia, remain in Ephesus so that you may instruct certain people not to teach false doctrine or to pay attention to myths and endless genealogies. These promote empty speculations rather than God’s plan, which operates by faith.” – 1 Timothy 1:3-4
When a team gets a new coach, there is a lot of speculation over what will happen next. Some are hopeful, and some are leery, but all try to figure out how this new coach will run things. Ultimately, all must wait and see how things will be once the coach arrives.
As humans, we all try to figure out the unknown in our minds. We do not like being left without a plan or an idea of what will come next. We spend hours dreaming or researching our next moves to have a plan before moving forward. Sometimes, we hate the unknown so much that we put our time and energy into worthless earthly entities.
For the early Christian church, there was so much unknown surrounding the return of Christ. Some thought it would be mere days after He left Earth.
As time passed, followers of Christ started to desire more of a plan and answers to their questions. They sought answers in all the wrong places to satisfy their desire for knowledge. It would be similar to seeing a fortune teller to figure out where you should go to college. Timothy told them that no one can tell you of God’s plan. The closest access we can get is to have faith.
Faith doesn’t look like answers; it looks like trust that God will be with you through the process. Faith doesn’t tell you where to go to college or what career path to take. Faith is trusting that God has a plan we don’t need to know. All we need to know is God Himself.
- Do you like to have a plan?
- What earthly system do you seek answers from?
- What does faith mean to you?
“God above, we worship You for all the wonderful and perfect things You are. We desire to know far more than what’s good for us. Help us to stop searching for answers and to know that all we need is faith. Show us how to have faith so strong that we move throughout our days without worrying about what’s to come next. Amen.”
