You Were Created to Be Significant
“You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt should lose its taste, how can it be made salty? It’s no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled under peoples feet. You are the light of the world. A city situated on a hill cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and puts it under a basket, but rather on the lampstand, and it gives light for all who are in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.” -- Matthew 5:13-16
I was blessed to be on the coaching staff when the Seattle Seahawks won Super Bowl 48. I will never forget the celebrations that took place after the game, arriving back in Seattle and celebrating with our fans at a massive parade. A few months later, I received my championship Super Bowl ring as well as a replica of the Vince Lombardi Trophy. The Vince Lombardi Trophy is presented to the winner of each Super Bowl. Every team that has won the Super Bowl has their Vince Lombardi Trophy proudly displayed in the lobby of their team headquarters. The Lombardi trophy means you have “made it” or that you are significant.
The Vince Lombardi Trophy is a beautiful piece of workmanship and is worthy of the compliments that it receives. Yet, the ultimate purpose of a trophy is not for the trophy to be admired and complimented but to give recognition to the OWNER of the trophy. Wherever you see a trophy on display, whether in the lobby of an NFL team or on a shelf in someone’s home, it tells you about the skill and accomplishments of the owner of the trophy. The Lombardi Trophy represented significance. A trophy is meant to bring Glory to the owner of the trophy. To bring glory to something means you make it look good!
Everyone who has been saved by Grace alone, through Faith alone, in Christ alone, is a trophy of God’s grace (Ephesians 2:8-9)! We are not our own, we have been bought with a price, the precious blood of Jesus Christ. Wherever we live, God has put us on display so that our words, our work, our worship, our conversation, our conduct and our character would bring Glory to His name. We have been created to declare that God is worthy and He has significance.
When people see our lives and taste our lives, we’re either going to be like the people in Luke 19 that got in the way of Zacchaeus being able to see who Jesus was when He came through Jericho, or we will be like the sycamore tree that helped Zacchaeus see Jesus and receive Him when He gave the invitation to fellowship.
You were created to be significant.
- We all want to get what we paid for regardless of what it is and what we paid for it. Jesus Christ paid the price with His life so that we would live to glorify Him. The question that each of us must prayerfully ask ourselves, “Is Jesus getting what He paid for?”
- As a coach, what does significance mean to you? A trophy or a meaningful impact?
Ephesians 2:8-10; 1 Corinthians 6:19-20; 1 Corinthians 10:31
“Spirit of the Living God, You were given to us to remind us of things. Please remind us that we are not our own; we have been bought with a price, and we are Your trophy to put on display like a city on a hill. Please help the work of our hands and the words of our mouth to be a reflection of You and reveal Your significance. Father, create in us a humble heart so we can reflect on Your glory and Your honor. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”
