No Hurry, No Worry

Ready

"...(she) approached from behind and touched the tassel of His robe. Instantly her bleeding stopped." - Luke 8:44

Set

As a high school girls’ basketball coach, I see our team often struggle being in a hurry on offense. Instead of squaring up and seeing the court, our players sometimes rush to dribble, with their heads down, only to look up and pass too late. They get anxious and worried instead of seeing the openings. In basketball, offensively talented players are often those who have a keen sense of the whole court at any moment. They are calm, not acting in haste, but carefully with purpose.

Likewise, Jesus never seemed to be in a hurry. He made the most of each moment in His life. He connected with others, and used His words and actions to be a part of God’s restoration to hurting people. It seems to reason this is why He wasn’t worried; He had faith and focus for the moment He was in, and never minded God’s interruptions.

When Jesus was on His way to heal a synagogue ruler’s daughter from death, He took time to stop, talk with and heal a woman who had suffered bleeding for years (Luke 8:40-48). Instead of rushing to the next thing with His head down, He saw the whole “court,” so to speak. Christ didn’t worry He would miss the opportunity to heal the ruler’s daughter. He allowed Himself to be used in the moment.

We can learn from Jesus’ example here of allowing the Holy Spirit to be our guide. To be purposeful, yet calm, not hurrying our lives and missing opportunities to minister. Just think of how God could use us if we would stop worrying about what’s next, slow down and look up. Our lives and the lives of others would be radically changed for Christ.

  1. What tends to keep you from living in the moment with God?
  2. What are your typical worries?
  3. How does hurrying in your life coincide with those worries?
