Eternal Focus

Ready

“So we do not focus on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.” -- 2 Corinthians 4:18

Set

Baseball was always a way of life for former Major League Baseball slugger Adrian Gonzalez. The three-time Gold Glove winner and four-time All-Star excelled at the game from the time he was a young boy in San Diego.

But make no mistake, when asked to put his life and 15-year MLB career into perspective, he explained how his priorities were always so much more than just the game. “No matter what – doing well, doing bad, statistics, box scores – all that stuff matters, but in the big picture it doesn’t. I can’t try to satisfy anybody here on earth, we’re here to satisfy Jesus.”

Gonzalez clearly did, and does, have his priorities in order as a follower of Christ. He’s more focused on his relationship with the Lord and sharing Christ’s saving message than comparing stat lines and win-loss records.

Where do your priorities lie? Is your athletic career defined by how many wins you can record? Or is the sole focus of your athletic career to bring God glory and lead others to Him through your success and defeat?

Go
  • Has your faith and foundation in Jesus ever been challenged by the desire to fit in with those around you? How did you respond to that challenge?
  • In what ways can you shift your focus to first honor God in your athletic endeavors?
Overtime

“Father, forgive me for the times that I pursue the praise of man through competition more than deflecting the honor and glory to You. Let it always be my utmost priority to make Your name known as I compete for You, an Audience of One. Amen.”
