“Now all the believers were together and held all things in common.” – Acts 2:44

Set

There is no other scene like a student section in a tied fourth quarter during a rival school football game. Students are packed together in rows, barely able to move. They are painted up and repping their team colors. They are all shouting, cheering and screaming student chants together. They share shakers, noise makers, and laughs and tears. These students are all a part of one body, all with the same goal.

When the early church began, the Christians may not have looked like hometown Friday Night Lights, but their bond was just as tight. Acts 2:44-47 shows us this picture beautifully: “Now all the believers were together and held all things in common. They sold their possessions and property and distributed the proceeds to all, as any had need. Every day they devoted themselves to meeting together in the temple, and broke bread from house to house. They ate their food with joyful and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people.”

The early Christians did life together. They encouraged and provided for each other, ate meals together, shared the Gospel, worshiped God, and went to church together. They were a body of believers living life together for one purpose: God.

This picture of the early church should be our example today. God did not create us to do life alone. In Genesis, the first thing God said that was not good was for “man to be alone.” He wants us to live life with others. He desires for us to have fellowship with others. He wants us to be with others in the high parts of our lives and the lows.

You may attend different schools and be on different sports teams, but God desires us to be one. You may be in a different grade level or different position on the team, but God desires us to be one. You may not look like the person to your left or speak like the person to your right, but God desires us to be one.

He wants us to be one body, one team: His team. And when we live like this, we will see a scene even more powerful and lively than a Friday night game.

Go
  • Does your team have a tight bond, or has the unity broken apart?
  • How can you help the team become a body again?
  • How can doing life with people strengthen your faith and help you in your life?
Overtime

“God, thank You for creating me for fellowship with You and others. Thank You that I don’t have to do life alone. Please help me unify my team, my school and my community. Amen.”
