We Are Family

Ready

“For the one who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one Father. That is why Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers and sisters.” -- Hebrews 2:11

In the 1979 World Series, the Pittsburgh Pirates adopted the wildly popular disco hit “We Are Family” by Sister Sledge as their theme song. The song was good, but I believe there is something powerful about “family,” especially when it’s a healthy one.

In Genesis 1 and 2, we learn that we were all created as part of God’s original family — in His image, for His purpose. We are said to be His masterpiece made for the Master’s purpose. But then we were separated from Him because of sin. By disobeying God, we choose to walk away and abandon God’s best for our lives. Only through Jesus are we restored to God’s family once again and forevermore.

As believers who have been saved by grace, we are all once again part of the same family — God’s family. Since this is true, there are some things I believe healthy families do.

Healthy families:

  • cultivate a safe environment of love, care, forgiveness and encouragement
  • serve one another out of humility
  • challenge one another to be our best for God
  • hold one another accountable

Each family member’s unique personality, gifts and strengths benefit the others. Every team and family needs players who play their part. So, let’s bring our best to our “family” on the field and in our homes.

“Lord, thank You for designing me to be part of Your family. Help me to play my part and bring my unique gifts and strengths to use for Your glory and to benefit others. Amen.”
