By His Voice

Ready

“The heavens were made by the word of the Lord, and all the stars, by the breath of his mouth. He gathers the water of the sea into a heap; he puts the depths into storehouses. Let the whole earth fear the Lord; let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him. For he spoke, and it came into being; he commanded, and it came into existence.” – Psalm 33:6-8

The renowned “coaches yell” is something many of us have experienced and can recall vividly. That voice is synonymous with power and authority, and when it’s heard, everyone stops what they’re doing and pays full attention.

Coaches are known for having such a loud voice that even in the middle of practice or a game, their players can hear them give directions to their team. It’s rare to see players who don’t listen to their coach; what the coach says goes.

Even though it’s rare to see disobedience of the coach’s wishes, the coach is still human. The coach cannot command the rain to stop so the game can continue. The coach cannot grow a tree, so the sun isn’t in his player’s eyes.

We would be amazed if our coach could speak these wonders into existence. Our coach cannot, but our God sure can – and He did. Psalms reminds us of the creation story in Genesis. Over seven days, God spoke into existence the heavens and the earth, the waters and mountains, the animals and humans.

God’s voice is the ultimate authority. He controls everything and can create and destroy what He puts into place. As humans, we should be in awe of this power, fear this power and give God the respect He deserves due to His power.

If you need a reminder of all that God has done, simply look up and see it with your own eyes.

  • What in nature makes you feel close to God?
  • Do you fear God and His power?
  • What authority does God have in your life?

“All-powerful God, we worship You and all You created. We stand in awe of Your power and might. Help us to fear You and give You the reverence due to our Creator. Humble us and show us that we are small compared to all You have done. Amen.”
