Our Firm Foundation

Ready

“For no one can lay any foundation other than what has been laid down. That foundation is Jesus Christ. If anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay, or straw, each one’s work will become obvious. For the day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire; the fire will test the quality of each one’s work.” – 1 Corinthians 3:11-13

Set

Have you ever heard your coach say, “We have to get back to our foundation?” In sports, this means we must remember how to do the fundamentals again before building new skills.

As we grow, we sometimes forget the foundation and focus too much on things that do not matter. You could have a tremendous social media following as an athlete, but if you forget how to do the essential functions, people will quickly see you have a weak foundation. You might have the newest equipment and the best trainers, but none of that matters if you can’t make a lay-up in basketball.

As Christians, our foundation is Jesus Christ. When our focus shifts from Christ to our glory or achievements, it becomes evident to our fellow believers that our foundation is set in the world, not Christ. What does it look like to have our foundation set in the world? You may be a worship leader and care more about your appearance and sound on stage than pointing people past you to Christ. Maybe you have decided to lead an FCA Huddle but are doing it to become noticed by someone or have people look to you as a leader instead of God. Maybe you want people to identify you as the “good Christian,” so you do all the right things but with a prideful spirit that is not from God.

It’s easy to get wrapped up in the excess of the world and lose our foundation to shaky ground. 1 Corinthians tells us that when it comes to times of hardship and testing, the ones who build their foundation on Christ will survive the fire, and those who have built on the things of this world will be consumed.

Take time today to look at where your foundation has shifted; where do you stand?

  • What is one characteristic of someone whose foundation is set in Christ?
  • In your life, what is something that can easily slip into your foundation?
Overtime

“Lord, You are our firm foundation on which we stand. Help us to not forget what brought us to You, where our faith began. We can easily get caught up in all this unnecessary excess that we believe matters. Guide us, Lord God, to know what suits our foundation and what does not. Amen.”
