Set Apart
“So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” - Colossians 3:1-2
My husband is a coach. At one of the universities where he was hired, he noticed that the highest expectation in the minds of the other coaches was to win the conference. To them, winning the conference was the epitome of their career. My husband stood out because he did not want to win only the conference but also a national championship.
Winning the conference would be a sign and a stepping stone showing that his team was headed in the right direction, but it would be nowhere near the end goal. His mind was set above the goals of the people around him, and you could tell by how he conducted his team and worked each day. If you aim to be the best golfer (or any competitor) of all time, work every day like you believe you can be the best. Set your mind on things above, and do not limit yourself to the goals that others might have.
As Christians, our goals and desires should be far above what the world thinks we should aspire to. Our goals should be set with heaven as our target. In everything we do, we should desire to glorify Christ, who is seated at the Father’s right hand in heaven. Earthly goals such as fame, wealth, power, independence, and beauty fall short of Christ’s goals.
If you’re wondering what goals are far above the goals of this earth, look no further than the fruits of the Spirit. We should aspire to a life filled with love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Galatians 5: 22-23). The ultimate goal is to live with these fruits to glorify God and bring more people into His kingdom.
- Are the goals for your life set by people or Christ?
- What is life like to be set apart in your goals?
- How can one keep their eyes on heaven when we are on earth?
“Lord Jesus, we praise You for living a life here on earth that is the example of how we should live. We are not conforming to the desires of this earth but transforming through Your love. Show us if we are living for the world or limiting ourselves based on who surrounds us. Give us the boldness to live a life with our eyes locked on heaven. Amen.”
