Understanding John 3: Eternal Life Over Earthly Life
“Anyone who accepts his testimony can affirm that God is true. For he is sent by God. He speaks God’s words, for God gives him the Spirit without limit. The Father loves his Son and has put everything into his hands. And anyone who believes in God’s Son has eternal life. Anyone who doesn’t obey the Son will never experience eternal life but remains under God’s angry judgment.” John 3:33-36
As a surfer, there have been days spent in the ocean, when I would not get out of the water for hours. I’d catch a perfect wave after wave, enjoying God’s creation so much so that I’d pray, “God I love Your Earth so much, I don’t want to ever die!” But as Christian, I know that this is not how it works; I am not going to live forever, nor do I have the assurance that I’ll be able to surf all of my life either. I know with all of my heart, that one day, I will die and my life here on Earth that God has created will come to an end even if I don’t want it to and if I love my life.
My grandmother once told me, “Christians never really die, Claire. The end of our life on Earth is simply the start of our eternal life in Heaven.” I know that when I die, my eternal life will start in heaven with God. Jesus is the only One who can change our lives on Earth into life in heaven with the Father. To experience this eternal life with God, we must obey Jesus by surrendering our earthly lives to Him, repenting our sins, asking for forgiveness, and accepting God’s grace.
This is the reason God sent Jesus so that we can experience eternal life in heaven with God. Even your very favorite days on Earth, even those with the perfect waves, do not compare to the life you will have with God in Heaven.
- Can you remember a time you realized that God gives you eternal life through Jesus?
- What does Jesus transforming your life mean to you?
- How will you let your earthly live affect your eternal life?
“Lord, thank You for loving me so much that You sent Jesus to Earth to give me eternal life; help me to focus on the eternal life that You have for me in heaven.”
