Why is Love So Important?
“If I speak human or angelic tongues but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith so that I can move mountains but do not have love, I am nothing. And if I give away all my possessions, and if I give over my body in order to boast but do not have love, I gain nothing.” – 1 Corinthians 13:1-4
If you gathered a football team and asked them their sport’s most crucial skill, I doubt they would all have the same answer.
The running backs might say speed, and the quarterback might say accuracy. A lineman might argue that strength is the best skill to have. Most people argue that the skill that is most required of them is the skill that is the most important.
If you were to gather a church congregation to ask this same question, I’m sure there would also be mixed results. Again, those strong in faith would say faith, those who love to study Scripture might say knowledge of the Bible, and so on.
What is the most crucial attribute of the Christian life? That’s a tricky question; thankfully, we get some insight in 1 Corinthians. Paul writes that all the other attributes and skills in our faith are worthless without love. That’s a powerful statement to make. That shows how important it is to love others, ourselves, and, most important, God. You could know all the verses in the Bible, but if you choose to not love your neighbor, then all that knowledge will be worthless. You could believe with all your heart that God can heal and perform miracles, but without love, it means nothing.
This shows us how powerful love is to others and ourselves. Try today to figure out whether you are operating your skills in the Kingdom of God with love. If you are, you will see God’s fruit produce much from your work. If you’re working without loving, you might have found your issue.

“God, You show us perfect love, and it’s beyond our understanding. We forget in this world how important loving truly is. Help us today to learn to love ourselves and see ourselves the way You created us. Guide us in learning how to love others the way You love them. Let us not forget how important it is. Amen.”
