Decision Time

“As for me and my family, we will worship the Lord.”– Joshua 24:15b
College decisions are big for an athlete. Everyone gathers around as the athlete sits at a table with differing college hats before them. By picking one hat, they commit where to spend the next four years. We can all agree it’s one of the greatest moments for an athlete.
We could also agree it would be strange for an athlete to pick up one hat and commit, but the next moment, pick up another hat and switch. And then switch again to another hat. And then again to another. Their commitment would be confusing, leaving everyone wondering where the athlete’s commitment lay.
There is a story in Joshua where the people of Israel were switching which god they committed to worship. Some days, it was the Lord God, but most days, it was a foreign god. Joshua confronted them by asking, “Choose for yourselves today: Which will you worship?” (Joshua 24:14).
This world has many hats to which we can commit our hearts: the popular hat, the culture hat, the social media hat and even the religious hat. But God wants us to commit to one thing and one thing alone: Him.
God wants your entire heart. He doesn’t want it split and switched, only to be worn on Sunday mornings. He wants you to be the same everywhere you go, boldly wearing your decision for Christ for others to see.
Make the decision and commit to God fully so others have no question of where your commitment lies.
- If you are honest, where does your commitment lie most of the time?
- What does it look like to decide and commit to God no matter where/what?
“God, help me stay committed to You alone. Help me to avoid switching up my heart’s commitment and worship. Forgive me when I do and teach me to commit only to You. Amen.”
