Chatting with God
By Emily Hill
“My heart has heard You say, ‘Come and talk with Me.’ And my heart responds, ‘Lord, I am coming.’” -- Psalm 27:8
When my basketball coach called me in asking to have a little chat, an instant feeling of dread set in. This was not an unusual occurrence as my coach valued feedback. The problem was my posture in receiving his coaching. I knew my coach had my best interest at heart, but I often cringed at the thought of listening to him critique my athletic ability, attitudes, or anything else.
Approaching a conversation with God can feel the same way. Sometimes He says, “Come and talk with Me,” and we go, but the posture of our heart is poor. With a begrudging attitude, we mutter, “OK. Fine.”
Acknowledging Jesus Christ as Lord of our lives is a posture of coachability that might involve some refining, but also invites the power of His Spirit into our lives. Choosing to delight in God and embracing His guidance in our lives leads to a life of faith and the right relationship with our Lord.
If I had been willing to listen to my coach, I would have learned more about the game. If we are willing to listen to God, we will learn more about the abundant life he offers. Listen for God’s direction today!
- When was the last time you went and talked with God?
- What is the posture of your heart towards prayer? One of dread or delight; obligation or opportunity?
Romans 10:9-13; Psalm 37:4-5; John 10:10
“Father, my heart has heard You say, “Come and talk with Me,” so my heart responds, “Lord, I’m coming.” Let the posture of my heart be one that is willing to listen to You.”
