Come and See

Ready

“The two disciples heard him say this and followed Jesus.  When Jesus turned and noticed them following him, he asked them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi” (which means “Teacher”), “Where are you staying?” “Come, and you’ll see,” he replied. So they went and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day…” – John 1:37-39

“Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Nathanael asked him. “Come and see,” Philip answered. Then Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said about him, “Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit.” How do you know me?” Nathanael asked. “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you,” Jesus answered. “Rabbi,” Nathanael replied, “You are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel!” – John 1:46-49

Set

What would you do if someone approached you and asked you to help them learn how to play your sport? Would you write out everything you know and give it to them? Would you tell them to go find a professional to teach them because you don’t know everything yet? More than likely, you would invite them to come practice with you so you could show them the basics, and they could see for themselves and start learning.

Sharing our faith is the same, but many feel they must be more qualified to lead someone to Christ because they don’t know everything. We would maybe be able to write down a few pointers or Bible verses and wish them luck. Why don’t we invite them along with us to come and see what being a Christian is like and who Jesus is?

In John, we see two great examples of how Jesus and Philip invited people to “come and see” to learn more about God. It was a personal invitation into their life to see God work.

Through the personal invitation that Philip extended to Nathaneal to come and meet Jesus, Nathaneal could encounter the personal love of Jesus before they ever met. This encounter brought Nathaneal to believe in Christ. All Philip did was invite him to where He was already going.

Go
  • Where can you invite someone this week to “come and see”?
  • What fears stop you from sharing your faith?
  • What tools can you use to beat these fears?
Overtime

“Lord, we worship at Your feet for equipping us with your Holy Spirit to share Your Good News with the world. Help us invite Your people alongside us this week as we walk closer to You. Give us strength and dismantle any fears we have about sharing Your Word and love with others. Amen.”
