A Godly Boast
By Arbor Diggs
“Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.” – 1 Corinthians 1:31b
Social media has skyrocketed in the last decade. Social media makes it easy to show off our biggest achievements. We post our new personal records, winning games, home run balls, 1,000-point club, medals, awards, state championship rings, and even cutting the net. Social media allows us to celebrate our accomplishments but, at the same time, forget how we even accomplished them in the first place.
When blessings come, we need to remember Who provides them: God. God is in control of our entire lives. Maybe you can lift more than you did last week, but it’s because God blessed you with a strong body. Or perhaps the gold ball is headed back to your hometown, but it’s because God created the path for you to get there. You may get an offer from your dream school, but God planned this from the beginning. You see, God is working constantly in your life, in your team, in your school.
Does this mean we can’t celebrate, post and rejoice when good things happen? Of course not. He wants you to celebrate accomplishments. He wants you to rejoice with your teammates and your family. He delights in us and rejoices when we rejoice. But He does not give good things just for us to get likes, popularity and good college offers. Everything God does for us is so He can be glorified.
When good things come our way, let’s rejoice, thank God and then boast about what God has done. God is the main reason for everything, small and big. He is the reason for the accomplishments, the wins and the successes. God planned our lives from the start and has given us the strength and the talent to achieve and accomplish everything that comes our way.
Let’s not boast not in ourselves but in God. Let’s take pride in what God has done for us and through us. Honor God and tell everyone what He has done in your life.
- Think of a time you saw a professional athlete boast in God vs. in themselves.
- How did their post impact the believers in the sports community?
- How do you think you can boast in God and not in yourself?
“God, I pray You get the glory alone. Humble me and teach me to boast only in You. Let others see Your power and goodness. Amen.”
